PANDORA'S BOX

CONCEPTUAL IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE | ARCHITECTURE BA THESIS | THEORETICAL PROJECT - FALL 2020

 

INSPIRED BY GREEK MYTHOLOGY, THIS PROJECT SEEKS TO PHYSICALIZE THE WORLD INSIDE THE BOX. IT FEATURES VARIOUS STATIONS THAT ILLUSTRATE DISTINCT FEELINGS AND CONCEPTS, USING ARCHITECTURE AND SCENIC DESIGN TO VIVIDLY CONVEY EMOTIONS AND EXPERIENCES TO VISITORS.

THE TALE OF PANDORA'S BOX, ROOTED IN GREEK MYTHOLOGY, RECOUNTS THE CREATION OF PANDORA, THE FIRST WOMAN ENTRUSTED WITH A MYSTERIOUS BOX. HER CURIOSITY LED HER TO OPEN IT, RELEASING ALL THE NEGATIVE ASPECTS INTO THE WORLD. MY INITIAL CONCEPT FOR THIS PROJECT ENVISIONED A SEPARATE DIMENSION WHERE SPIRITS OF DARKNESS CRAFTED THE SPACE AROUND THEM TO MATCH THEIR PERSONALITIES, WHICH DEVELOPED INTO THIS CONCEPT ART.

DRAWING INSPIRATION FROM HESIOD AND OVID'S DEPICTIONS OF THE AGES OF MANKIND, I CONCEIVED A SEQUENTIAL SCENARIO FOR AN IMMERSIVE ARCHITECTURAL EXPERIENCE. GUIDING VISITORS THROUGH VARIOUS AGES, THE JOURNEY BEGINS IN THE GOLDEN AGE AND UNFOLDS THROUGH SILVER, BRONZE, AND IRON AGES. EACH ERA FEATURES STATIONS REPRESENTING ELEMENTS FROM PANDORA'S BOX, IMMERSING VISITORS IN UNIQUE EXPERIENCES BEFORE CONCLUDING WITH THE HOPE STATION. THE EXTERIOR OF EACH STATION SYMBOLIZES THE OVERARCHING CONCEPT, WHILE THE INTERIOR SUBTLY MANIFESTS IT, CREATING A THOUGHT-PROVOKING AND VISUALLY ENGAGING EXPLORATION OF THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE.
